Features
SCM has 2 particularly awesome features:
SCM can back up the configuration of multiple kinds of devices, simultaneously.
Configuration items are stored in a revision control system (Subversion) so you can track changes to your configuration. You can use SCM to back up the configuration of your test lab (set up to duplicate a particular customer's bug, for example) so that in 2 weeks time, when you've reconfigured everything to test sometihng else, you can back up the current configuration, and then restore the lab back to the configuration it had 2 weeks ago. Imagine trying to do this without a unified tool!
SCM has a highly flexible, dynamic rule based auditing component.
You can set up a series of rules that your devices' configurations are checked against. Any devices that break the rules can be listed in a report. This makes it much easier to guard against configurations that drift from the standards you've developed, possibly to the point where the device no longer works after a reboot.
Because SCM supports different types of devices, you can use the 1 tool to manage configuration for all your different devices, be they Cisco, Network Appliance, Unix hosts, or whatever. Instead of having a different backup tool for every vendor's equipment, you can use 1.
